Ingredients:

  • For the Meat Sauce:
    • 2 tablespoons olive oil
    • 1 onion, finely chopped
    • 2 cloves garlic, minced
    • 1 lb ground beef
    • 1 lb ground pork (or use additional beef)
    • 1 cup red wine (optional)
    • 28 oz can crushed tomatoes
    • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
    • 1 teaspoon dried basil
    • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
    • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • For the Cheese Layer:
    • 3 cups mozzarella cheese, shredded
    • 1 cup Parmesan cheese, grated
    • 15 oz ricotta cheese (optional for added creaminess)
  • Additional:
    • Cooked pasta sheets or use ready-to-bake no-boil lasagna sheets

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Meat Sauce:
    • In a large skillet or saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat.
    • Add the onion and garlic, sauté until they are translucent.
    • Increase the heat to high and add the ground beef and pork. Cook until browned, breaking up the meat with a spoon.
    • Pour in the red wine, if using, and let it reduce slightly.
    • Add the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, basil, oregano, salt, and pepper. Reduce the heat to low and simmer for at least 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  2. Layer the Dish:
    • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
    • In a baking dish, start with a layer of meat sauce at the bottom.
    • Follow with a layer of pasta sheets.
    • Spread a layer of ricotta cheese over the pasta, then sprinkle with mozzarella and Parmesan.
    • Repeat the layering process until all ingredients are used, finishing with a generous layer of cheeses on top.
  3. Bake:
    • Cover the baking dish with foil and bake for 25 minutes.
    • Remove the foil and bake for another 10-15 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown.
  4. Serve:
    • Let the dish sit for about 10 minutes before serving to settle the layers.
    • Garnish with chopped parsley or basil for a fresh touch.
