Caramelized Apple Tarte Tatin
Ingredients
- 6 large apples (such as Granny Smith or Golden Delicious), peeled, cored, and halved
- 1 cup of granulated sugar
- 4 tablespoons of unsalted butter
- 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
- 1 sheet of puff pastry (store-bought or homemade)
- Optional: Cinnamon or nutmeg for added spice
Instructions
Preparing the Caramel
- Preheat Oven: Begin by heating your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Caramelize Sugar: In a 10-inch ovenproof skillet, melt the sugar over medium heat, stirring constantly until it turns a deep amber color. Remove from heat and stir in butter and vanilla, spreading the caramel evenly across the bottom of the skillet.
Arranging the Apples
- Arrange Apples: Place the apple halves cut-side up in the skillet on top of the caramel. Overlap as needed and pack them tightly.
- Cook on Stove: Return the skillet to low heat and let the apples cook for about 20 minutes until they start to soften.
Baking the Tarte
- Prepare Pastry: While apples cook, roll out your puff pastry into a circle that just covers the skillet.
- Cover Apples: Place the pastry over the apples in the skillet, tucking the edges down around the apples.
- Bake: Transfer the skillet to the oven and bake for about 25-30 minutes until the pastry is golden and puffed.
- Cool and Flip: Allow the tarte to cool for about 10 minutes, then carefully invert it onto a large plate.
Serving
Serve your tarte tatin warm, ideally with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of crème fraîche for a perfect contrast.
