Savory Meatballs with Gravy Recipe

Ingredients

For the Meatballs:
  • 1 pound (450 g) ground beef or a mix of beef and pork
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 egg
  • 1 small onion, finely diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup parsley, chopped (plus extra for garnish)
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil (for frying)
For the Gravy:
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Meatballs:
    • In a large bowl, combine the breadcrumbs and milk. Let sit for 2-3 minutes until the breadcrumbs soak up the milk.
    • Add the ground meat, egg, diced onion, minced garlic, parsley, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix until well combined, but don’t overmix.
    • Form the mixture into meatballs (about 1 to 1.5 inches in diameter).
  2. Cook the Meatballs:
    • Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the meatballs in batches, making sure not to overcrowd the pan.
    • Cook for 6-8 minutes, turning occasionally, until browned on all sides. Transfer to a plate and set aside.
  3. Make the Gravy:
    • In the same skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Sprinkle in the flour and whisk continuously to form a roux. Cook for 1-2 minutes until golden.
    • Gradually pour in the beef broth, whisking constantly to prevent lumps. Add Worcestershire sauce, onion powder, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
    • Let the gravy simmer for 3-5 minutes until it thickens slightly.
  4. Combine Meatballs and Gravy:
    • Return the meatballs to the skillet and gently toss them in the gravy. Cover and simmer for an additional 5-7 minutes, ensuring the meatballs are fully cooked and infused with the gravy.
  5. Serve:
    • Transfer to a serving dish, garnish with fresh parsley, and serve hot. Pair with mashed potatoes, rice, or crusty bread to soak up the delicious gravy.

Tips

  • For extra flavor, you can add grated Parmesan cheese to the meatball mixture.
  • Make-ahead option: Prepare and brown the meatballs in advance, then refrigerate or freeze them. Cook them in the gravy when ready to serve.
  • To lighten the recipe, you can bake the meatballs at 400°F (200°C) for 15-20 minutes instead of frying.

Enjoy these rich, flavorful meatballs as a comforting main dish or a crowd-pleasing appetizer!
