Ingredients:

  • 14 oz firm tofu, pressed and cut into cubes
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup or honey
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 inch piece of ginger, grated
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil (for frying)
  • Sesame seeds (for garnish)
  • Green onions, chopped (for garnish)
  • Cooked rice, to serve

Instructions:

  1. Marinate the Tofu:
    • In a bowl, combine the soy sauce, maple syrup, rice vinegar, sesame oil, minced garlic, and grated ginger. Stir well to mix.
    • Add the tofu cubes to the marinade and gently toss to coat. Let it marinate for at least 15 minutes.
  2. Prepare the Sauce:
    • Remove the tofu from the marinade and set aside. Pour the leftover marinade into a small saucepan.
    • Mix cornstarch with water in a small bowl until smooth. Add this slurry to the marinade in the saucepan.
    • Bring to a simmer over medium heat, stirring constantly until the sauce thickens. Remove from heat.
  3. Cook the Tofu:
    • Heat the vegetable oil in a large pan over medium-high heat.
    • Add the marinated tofu cubes, frying until all sides are golden and crispy.
    • Once crispy, reduce the heat to low and pour the thickened sauce over the tofu. Toss gently to coat all pieces with the sauce.
  4. Serve:
    • Serve the glazed tofu over a bed of cooked rice. Garnish with sesame seeds and chopped green onions.

Tips:

  • Pressing Tofu: Ensure to press the tofu well to remove excess water. This helps in achieving a crispier texture when fried.
  • Variations: You can add stir-fried vegetables like bell peppers, broccoli, or snap peas to the dish for more color and nutrition.
