Savory Meat Strudel Recipe
Ingredients:
- 1 lb (450 g) beef or lamb, thinly sliced
- 1 large onion, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 bell pepper, diced
- 1 cup mushrooms, sliced
- 1 teaspoon thyme
- 1 teaspoon rosemary
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 4 tablespoons butter
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 cup beef broth
- 8 sheets of phyllo dough
- Melted butter for brushing phyllo
Instructions:
- Prepare the Filling:
- Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
- Add the onions, garlic, and bell pepper. Sauté until the onions are translucent.
- Add the mushrooms and cook until they are soft.
- Add the thinly sliced meat, thyme, rosemary, salt, and pepper. Cook until the meat is browned.
- Sprinkle flour over the cooked meat and vegetables, stir to combine, and cook for another minute.
- Pour in the beef broth, stir, and simmer until the mixture thickens into a gravy. Remove from heat and let it cool.
- Assemble the Strudel:
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Lay out a sheet of phyllo dough on a clean surface, brush lightly with melted butter. Place another sheet on top and brush again. Repeat until you have four layers.
- Spread half of the meat mixture along one edge of the phyllo stack, leaving a small border.
- Roll up the phyllo dough around the filling, tucking in the ends as you go to seal the filling inside.
- Place the roll seam-side down on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Brush the top with more melted butter.
- Repeat the process for the remaining phyllo sheets and meat filling.
- Bake the Strudel:
- Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes or until the phyllo is golden brown and crisp.
- Serve:
- Let the strudel cool for a few minutes before slicing. Serve warm.
