Donald Trump Gets More Bad News
Former President Donald Trump faced more legal challenges on Thursday, as he was charged with multiple counts related to his alleged involvement in the January 6, 2021, riot at the U.S. Capitol. The charges include conspiracy to defraud the United States, conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding, obstruction of an official proceeding, and conspiracy to violate constitutional rights.
Trump appeared at the Elijah Barrett Prettyman Federal Courthouse in Washington, D.C., at around 4:15 p.m. ET, where he pleaded not guilty to all charges. This development follows earlier bad news for Trump, as Manhattan federal prosecutors obtained access to video testimony he gave during the E. Jean Carroll defamation case in May. In that case, Trump was found liable for sexual abuse and defamation, resulting in a $5 million judgment against him.
Prosecutors have been seeking to use this taped deposition in the upcoming March 2024 criminal trial, where Trump is accused of orchestrating a hush-money payment to adult film star Stormy Daniels to silence claims of an affair during the 2016 presidential campaign. Trump was indicted in the Daniels case in March, facing 34 felony counts of falsifying business records. He pleaded not guilty and has consistently denied any wrongdoing, claiming that the investigations are part of a politically motivated “witch hunt” by the Department of Justice (DOJ).

Federal prosecutors argue that Trump’s comments about sexual misconduct in the Carroll case are relevant to the Daniels case, as they believe it shows a pattern of behavior. Trump’s attorneys, however, contend that the evidence from the Carroll case should remain confidential under a protective order. This ongoing legal battle adds to the array of legal troubles Trump faces as he continues to navigate the fallout from his time in office.
