- 1 package phyllo dough (16 oz), thawed
- 2 cups walnuts or pistachios, finely chopped
- 1 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 tsp cinnamon
For the Syrup:
- 1 cup water
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup honey
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 tsp lemon juice
Instructions:
- Preheat Oven:
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Prepare the Nut Mixture:
- In a bowl, combine the chopped nuts with cinnamon and set aside.
- Assemble the Baklava:
- Brush a 9×13-inch baking dish with some of the melted butter.
- Place one sheet of phyllo dough in the dish and brush with melted butter. Repeat this process until you have layered 10 sheets of phyllo dough, brushing each sheet with butter.
- Sprinkle a thin layer of the nut mixture on top of the phyllo dough.
- Add another 5 layers of phyllo dough, brushing each with butter. Continue layering nuts and phyllo dough, ending with 10 more layers of phyllo dough on top. Brush the top layer with plenty of butter.
- Cut the Baklava:
- Using a sharp knife, cut the baklava into diamond or square shapes before baking.
- Bake the Baklava:
- Bake the baklava in the preheated oven for 50–60 minutes, or until the phyllo dough is golden and crispy.
- Prepare the Syrup:
- While the baklava is baking, combine the water, sugar, honey, vanilla extract, and lemon juice in a small saucepan. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat and let it simmer for 10 minutes. Remove from heat and let it cool slightly.
- Add the Syrup:
- Once the baklava is out of the oven, immediately pour the syrup evenly over the entire dish, making sure to cover all the cuts. Let the baklava cool completely to allow the syrup to soak in.
- Serve:
- Once fully cooled and the syrup has been absorbed, serve the baklava with a garnish of extra nuts if desired.
