For the Bread Rolls:

  • 6-8 medium-sized bread rolls or baguette slices (cut into 2-inch pieces, hollowed out)
  • 2 tablespoons butter (for greasing)

For the Meat Filling:

  • 1 pound (450 g) ground beef, chicken, or turkey
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1/4 cup chopped parsley
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese (optional)
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano or thyme (optional)

For the Sauce Topping:

  • 2 medium tomatoes, finely grated or pureed
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon sugar (optional, to balance acidity)
  • 1/4 cup grated cheese (optional, for topping)

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Bread Rolls

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Cut the bread rolls or baguette into 2-inch pieces and carefully hollow out the centers, leaving a sturdy shell. Set aside.

Step 2: Make the Meat Filling

  1. In a large bowl, combine the ground meat, onion, garlic, parsley, Parmesan (if using), egg, salt, pepper, paprika, and oregano. Mix well until fully incorporated.
  2. Fill the hollowed-out bread rolls generously with the meat mixture, packing it in tightly.

Step 3: Prepare the Sauce

  1. In a small bowl, combine the grated tomatoes, tomato paste, water, olive oil, salt, and pepper. Add sugar if desired. Mix well.
  2. Spread a thin layer of the sauce on top of the stuffed bread rolls, ensuring each is covered.

Step 4: Bake

  1. Grease a baking dish with butter or oil and arrange the stuffed bread rolls in it.
  2. Cover with foil and bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes.
  3. Remove the foil, sprinkle with grated cheese (if using), and bake uncovered for an additional 10 minutes, or until the tops are golden and the meat is cooked through.

Step 5: Serve

  1. Remove from the oven and let cool slightly before serving.
  2. Garnish with fresh parsley or a drizzle of olive oil for added flavor.
