– 12 oz (340 g) spaghetti
– 1 tablespoon olive oil
– 1 onion, finely chopped
– 2 cloves garlic, minced
– 1 pound (450 g) ground beef or pork
– 1 can (28 oz or 800 g) crushed tomatoes
– 2 tablespoons tomato paste
– 1 teaspoon dried oregano
– 1 teaspoon dried basil
– Salt and black pepper, to taste
– 1/4 cup red wine (optional)
– Fresh basil or parsley, for garnish
– Grated Parmesan cheese, for serving
Instructions:
1. **Cook the Spaghetti:**
– Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the spaghetti and cook according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
2. **Make the Meat Sauce:**
– Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook until softened, about 3-4 minutes.
– Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.
– Add the ground beef or pork to the skillet and cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon as it cooks. Drain any excess fat.
– Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, oregano, basil, salt, and black pepper. Add the red wine, if using, and bring the sauce to a simmer.
– Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer for about 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it thickens slightly and the flavors meld together.
3. **Combine and Serve:**
– Add the cooked spaghetti to the sauce and toss until the pasta is well coated.
– Serve the spaghetti in bowls or on plates, garnished with fresh basil or parsley and grated Parmesan cheese.
