Scalloped Potatoes Recipe
Ingredients:
- 2 lbs potatoes (such as Russet or Yukon Gold), peeled and thinly sliced
- 1 onion, thinly sliced
- 3 tablespoons butter
- 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups milk (or a mixture of milk and cream for richness)
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon paprika (optional for a bit of color and flavor)
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional for a cheesy version)
- Fresh parsley, chopped for garnish
Instructions:
- Preheat Oven:
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Prepare the Sauce:
- In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter.
- Add the flour and stir to form a smooth roux. Cook for about 1 minute to remove the floury taste.
- Gradually add the milk while whisking constantly to prevent lumps. Cook until the sauce thickens slightly, about 4-5 minutes.
- Season with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and paprika. Remove from heat.
- Layer the Potatoes:
- In a greased baking dish, arrange a layer of potato slices, followed by a layer of onion slices.
- Pour some of the sauce over this layer, then repeat the layers until all ingredients are used.
- Bake:
- Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for about 60 minutes.
- Remove the foil, sprinkle with shredded cheese if using, and bake uncovered for another 20-30 minutes or until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden and bubbly.
- Garnish and Serve:
- Garnish with chopped parsley before serving.
This dish is perfect for a comforting meal and pairs well with a variety of proteins like roasted meats or can be enjoyed on its own as a hearty vegetarian option. Enjoy your cooking!
