Ingredients:

  • 2 pounds potatoes (such as Russet or Yukon Gold), peeled and thinly sliced
  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (or a mix of your favorite melting cheeses)
  • 2 tablespoons chopped chives for garnish

Instructions:

  1. Preheat Oven and Prepare Baking Dish:
    • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
    • Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish with butter.
  2. Prepare Cream Mixture:
    • In a saucepan, combine heavy cream, milk, minced garlic, salt, pepper, and nutmeg.
    • Heat over medium until the mixture just comes to a simmer, then remove from heat.
  3. Layer the Potatoes:
    • Arrange a layer of potato slices at the bottom of the greased baking dish, overlapping them slightly.
    • Pour a portion of the cream mixture over the potatoes.
    • Sprinkle a portion of the shredded cheese over the cream.
    • Repeat layering with remaining potatoes, cream mixture, and cheese.
  4. Bake:
    • Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 60 minutes.
    • Remove the foil, and continue baking for another 20-30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the potatoes are tender.
  5. Garnish and Serve:
    • Remove from oven and let it sit for a few minutes to set.
    • Sprinkle chopped chives over the top before serving.
