Ingredients:
- 1 pound of ground sausage (Italian or breakfast sausage)
- 4 cups of diced potatoes (or frozen hash browns)
- 1 small onion, chopped
- 2 cups of shredded cheese (cheddar, mozzarella, or a mix)
- 1 can of cream of mushroom or cream of chicken soup
- 1/2 cup of sour cream
- 1/4 cup of milk
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Green onions, chopped for garnish
- Butter for greasing the dish
Instructions:
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a large baking dish with butter.
- Cook Sausage: In a large skillet, cook the sausage over medium heat until browned. Break it up into small pieces as it cooks. Drain excess fat and set aside.
- Prepare Potatoes: If using fresh potatoes, boil them until slightly tender, about 8-10 minutes. Drain and set aside. If using frozen hash browns, no need to precook.
- Mix Ingredients: In a large bowl, mix together the cooked sausage, potatoes, chopped onion, shredded cheese, soup, sour cream, and milk. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Assemble: Pour the mixture into the prepared baking dish and spread it out evenly.
- Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for about 40-45 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and bubbly.
- Garnish and Serve: Once baked, remove from the oven and let it sit for a few minutes. Garnish with chopped green onions before serving.
