Ingredients:

    • 2 pounds ground beef or lamb
    • 1 large onion, chopped
    • 3 cloves garlic, minced
    • 1 carrot, diced
    • 1 cup tomato sauce
    • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
    • 1 teaspoon dried basil
    • Salt and pepper to taste
  • For the vegetable layer (optional):
    • 2 cups sliced bell peppers or zucchini
  • For the topping:
    • 2 cups shredded cheese (such as mozzarella or a mix of cheddar and Parmesan)
    • Fresh herbs for garnish (like thyme or parsley)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven:
    • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Cook the meat:
    • In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground meat until it is browned.
    • Add the onion, garlic, and carrot, cooking until the vegetables are softened.
    • Stir in the tomato sauce, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper. Simmer for about 10 minutes until the mixture thickens slightly.
  3. Layer the casserole:
    • If using vegetables, layer them at the bottom of a large baking dish.
    • Spoon the meat mixture over the vegetables or directly into the baking dish if not using additional vegetables.
    • Top with shredded cheese.
  4. Bake:
    • Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown.
  5. Serve:
