Shepherd’s Pie Recipe
Ingredients:
- For the meat layer:
- 1 lb ground beef or lamb
- 1 onion, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 cup mixed vegetables (carrots, peas, corn)
- 2 tablespoons tomato paste
- 1 cup beef or chicken broth
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 2 tablespoons flour (to thicken, optional)
- For the mashed potato layer:
- 2 lbs potatoes, peeled and chopped
- 4 tablespoons butter
- 1/2 cup milk
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Cheese topping:
- 1 cup grated cheddar cheese
Instructions:
- Prepare the meat layer:
- In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground meat until browned. Drain excess grease.
- Add the chopped onion and minced garlic, cooking until they are softened.
- Stir in the vegetables, tomato paste, flour (if using), broth, and Worcestershire sauce. Bring to a simmer and let the mixture thicken slightly. Season with salt and pepper.
- Once thickened, remove from heat and set aside.
- Prepare the mashed potatoes:
- Boil the potatoes in salted water until tender, about 15-20 minutes.
- Drain and return potatoes to the pot. Add butter, milk, and mash until smooth. Season with salt and pepper.
- Assemble the pie:
- Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
- In a baking dish, spread the meat mixture in an even layer.
- Top with the mashed potatoes, spreading them out with a spatula.
- Sprinkle the grated cheese over the top.
- Bake:
- Place in the oven and bake for about 20 minutes, or until the top is golden and bubbly.
- Serve:
- Let the pie cool for a few minutes before serving to help it set.
