Ingredients:

  • For the meat layer:
    • 1 lb ground beef or lamb
    • 1 onion, chopped
    • 2 cloves garlic, minced
    • 1 cup mixed vegetables (carrots, peas, corn)
    • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
    • 1 cup beef or chicken broth
    • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
    • Salt and pepper to taste
    • 2 tablespoons flour (to thicken, optional)
  • For the mashed potato layer:
    • 2 lbs potatoes, peeled and chopped
    • 4 tablespoons butter
    • 1/2 cup milk
    • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Cheese topping:
    • 1 cup grated cheddar cheese

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the meat layer:
    • In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground meat until browned. Drain excess grease.
    • Add the chopped onion and minced garlic, cooking until they are softened.
    • Stir in the vegetables, tomato paste, flour (if using), broth, and Worcestershire sauce. Bring to a simmer and let the mixture thicken slightly. Season with salt and pepper.
    • Once thickened, remove from heat and set aside.
  2. Prepare the mashed potatoes:
    • Boil the potatoes in salted water until tender, about 15-20 minutes.
    • Drain and return potatoes to the pot. Add butter, milk, and mash until smooth. Season with salt and pepper.
  3. Assemble the pie:
    • Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
    • In a baking dish, spread the meat mixture in an even layer.
    • Top with the mashed potatoes, spreading them out with a spatula.
    • Sprinkle the grated cheese over the top.
  4. Bake:
    • Place in the oven and bake for about 20 minutes, or until the top is golden and bubbly.
  5. Serve:
    • Let the pie cool for a few minutes before serving to help it set.
