Braided Bread Rolls

 

 

 

Ingredients:

– 4 cups all-purpose flour
– 1/4 cup sugar
– 1 packet (2 1/4 tsp) active dry yeast
– 1 tsp salt
– 1 cup warm milk (110°F / 45°C)
– 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
– 2 large eggs
– 1 egg (for egg wash)
– 1 tbsp water (for egg wash)

Instructions:

 

1. **Activate the Yeast:**
– In a small bowl, combine the warm milk and sugar. Sprinkle the yeast over the top and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes, until it becomes frothy.

2. **Make the Dough:**
– In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt.
– Add the softened butter, eggs, and the yeast mixture. Mix until a soft dough forms.
– Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 10 minutes, until it becomes smooth and elastic. Alternatively, you can use a stand mixer with a dough hook attachment.

3. **First Rise:**
– Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean cloth or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1-2 hours, or until it has doubled in size.

4. **Shape the Rolls:**
– After the dough has risen, punch it down to release the air. Divide the dough into equal portions, depending on how large you want your rolls to be.
– For each roll, divide the portion of dough into three smaller pieces, roll them into long ropes, and braid them together. Pinch the ends to seal and tuck them under to form a neat shape.
– Place the braided rolls on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

5. **Second Rise:**
– Cover the rolls with a cloth and let them rise for another 30-45 minutes until they are puffy.

6. **Prepare the Egg Wash:**
– Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
– In a small bowl, whisk together one egg with a tablespoon of water. Brush the egg wash over the top of the rolls to give them a shiny, golden crust.

7. **Bake:**
– Bake the rolls in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until they are golden brown and sound hollow when tapped on the bottom.

8. **Cool and Serve:**
– Let the rolls cool on a wire rack before serving. These braided bread rolls are perfect with butter, jam, or as a side to any meal.
