Chocolate Toffee Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • Optional toppings: crushed almonds, pecans, or crisped rice

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Baking Sheet:
    • Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone mat. Set aside.
  2. Combine Ingredients:
    • In a heavy saucepan over medium heat, combine the butter, sugar, water, and salt.
    • Stir continuously until the mixture begins to boil. Once boiling, reduce to a simmer and do not stir again until the next step.
  3. Cook the Toffee:
    • Allow the mixture to cook until it reaches a deep amber color, or 300°F (149°C) on a candy thermometer. This usually takes about 15 minutes.
    • Remove from heat and quickly stir in the vanilla extract.
  4. Pour and Set:
    • Pour the hot toffee onto the prepared baking sheet, spreading it with a spatula to even it out.
    • Wait about a minute or so, then sprinkle the chocolate chips over the hot toffee. Let them sit for a few minutes to melt, then spread the melted chocolate evenly over the toffee.
    • If using, sprinkle your chosen toppings over the melted chocolate.
  5. Cool the Toffee:
    • Allow the toffee to cool completely at room temperature. Once set, break into pieces.
  6. Storage:
    • Store the toffee in an airtight container at room temperature for up to two weeks, or in the refrigerator if you prefer it chilled.

This recipe should yield a delicious, crunchy toffee that’s perfect for sharing or gifting during the holidays or special occasions. Enjoy your candy making!
