1. **Prepare the Dough:**
– In a large mixing bowl, combine warm milk and sugar. Sprinkle yeast over the top and let it sit for about 5 minutes until foamy.
– Add melted butter, egg, and vanilla extract to the yeast mixture, and stir to combine.
– Gradually add flour and salt to the wet ingredients, mixing until a dough forms.
– Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes, until smooth and elastic. Alternatively, use a stand mixer with a dough hook attachment.
– Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
2. **Shape the Rolls:**
– Punch down the risen dough and divide it into 12 equal pieces.
– Flatten each piece into a circle and place a chocolate square in the center.
– Fold the edges of the dough around the chocolate to seal it, forming a ball.
– Place each ball seam-side down in a greased baking pan, leaving a little space between each.
3. **Prepare for Baking:**
– Cover the shaped rolls with a kitchen towel and let them rise for an additional 30 minutes, or until puffy.
– Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
– Brush the tops of the rolls with the beaten egg and sprinkle generously with chocolate chips.
4. **Bake the Rolls:**
– Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown and the tops are set.
– Remove from the oven and allow to cool slightly before serving.
These rolls are perfect for a sweet breakfast or as a dessert treat. Enjoy the gooey chocolate center!
