Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Cake Base
- Bake the chocolate cake according to the box instructions or prepare a simple sponge cake. Allow it to cool completely.
- Slice the cake into thin, flat layers. If using store-bought sponge, cut to fit your serving dish.
Step 2: Make the Caramel Cream
- In a saucepan, combine the milk, sugar, and cornstarch. Whisk until smooth.
- Heat the mixture over medium heat, stirring constantly, until it thickens to a custard-like consistency.
- Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract and caramel sauce. Let it cool slightly.
Step 3: Prepare the Chocolate Ganache
- Heat the heavy cream in a saucepan over medium heat until it starts to simmer (do not boil).
- Remove from heat and add the chopped chocolate. Stir until smooth and glossy. Allow it to cool slightly.
Step 4: Assemble the Layers
- In a glass dish, place a layer of chocolate cake at the bottom. Lightly drizzle with milk to keep it moist (optional).
- Spread a generous layer of caramel cream over the cake.
- Add another layer of cake, followed by more caramel cream. Repeat until you reach the top of the dish.
- Pour the chocolate ganache over the final layer and spread evenly.
Step 5: Decorate
- Using a piping bag, decorate the top with whipped cream or melted white chocolate in a pattern of your choice.
Step 6: Chill
- Refrigerate the dessert for at least 4 hours or overnight to set.
