Baked Pasta Casserole with Meat Sauce and Cheese

Ingredients:
For the Meat Sauce:
- 1 lb (450g) ground beef or lamb
- 1 medium onion, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 can (14 oz) crushed tomatoes
- 2 tablespoons tomato paste
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1/2 teaspoon dried basil
- Salt and pepper, to taste
For the Pasta Layer:

- 12 oz (340g) penne or ziti pasta
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese (for topping)
For the Bechamel Sauce:
- 4 tablespoons butter
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 cups milk
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- A pinch of nutmeg (optional)
- 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
Instructions:
- Cook the Pasta:
- Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil and cook the pasta according to package instructions until al dente. Drain, toss with butter, and set aside.
- Prepare the Meat Sauce:
- In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef until browned. Add the chopped onion and garlic and cook until softened.
- Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 10-15 minutes until the sauce thickens. Set aside.
- Make the Bechamel Sauce:
- In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the flour and whisk continuously for 1-2 minutes until smooth and lightly golden.
- Gradually pour in the milk, whisking constantly to avoid lumps. Cook until the sauce thickens, about 5-7 minutes.
- Season with salt, pepper, and a pinch of nutmeg if using. Stir in the Parmesan cheese until melted and smooth.
- Assemble the Casserole:
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- In a baking dish, spread half of the pasta as the first layer. Pour the meat sauce over the pasta, spreading it evenly.
- Layer the remaining pasta over the meat sauce, then pour the Bechamel sauce on top, spreading it to cover evenly.
- Sprinkle shredded mozzarella cheese on top for a golden, cheesy finish.
- Bake:
- Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until the top is golden and bubbly.
- Let the casserole rest for 10 minutes before serving.
