  • For the Burger Patties:
    • 1.5 lbs (680 g) ground beef (80/20 blend for juiciness)
    • Salt and pepper, to taste
    • 4 slices cheddar cheese
    • 4 slices Swiss cheese
  • For the Caramelized Onions:
    • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
    • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
    • 1 tablespoon olive oil
    • 1 teaspoon sugar (optional, to enhance sweetness)
    • 1/2 teaspoon salt
    • 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar (optional, for added depth of flavor)
  • For the Assembly:
    • 4 sesame seed burger buns (sesame and black sesame mix for extra flavor)
    • 2 cups fresh arugula or mixed greens
    • Your favorite burger condiments (ketchup, mustard, mayo, etc.)
    • Pickles (optional)
    • Crispy bacon (optional, for an extra layer of flavor)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Caramelized Onions:
    • In a large skillet, heat the butter and olive oil over medium heat.
    • Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until they start to soften, about 5-7 minutes.
    • Sprinkle in the sugar (if using) and salt, and continue cooking for another 20-25 minutes, stirring frequently, until the onions are deeply browned and caramelized.
    • Stir in the balsamic vinegar, if using, and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes.
    • Remove from heat and set aside.
  2. Cook the Burger Patties:
    • Divide the ground beef into 4 equal portions and gently shape each portion into a thin patty, about 4-5 inches in diameter. Avoid overworking the meat to keep the patties tender.
    • Season each patty with salt and pepper on both sides.
    • Heat a grill or a large skillet over medium-high heat.
    • Cook the patties for about 3-4 minutes on the first side, then flip.
    • Immediately add a slice of cheddar cheese on two patties and Swiss cheese on the other two, allowing the cheese to melt as the patties finish cooking, another 3-4 minutes.
  3. Toast the Buns:
    • While the patties are cooking, lightly toast the burger buns on the grill or in a separate skillet until golden brown.
  4. Assemble the Burgers:
    • Place a generous handful of arugula or mixed greens on the bottom half of each bun.
    • Place one patty with cheddar cheese on the greens, followed by a patty with Swiss cheese.
    • Top the stack with a heaping spoonful of caramelized onions.
    • Add any additional toppings you like, such as pickles, crispy bacon, or condiments.
    • Finish with the top half of the bun.
  5. Serve:
    • Serve the burgers immediately with your favorite sides like fries, sweet potato fries, or a simple salad.

Enjoy!
This ultimate stacked cheeseburger combines the rich flavors of juicy beef, sharp cheddar, and creamy Swiss cheese, all balanced with the sweetness of caramelized onions and the freshness of greens. The sesame seed bun adds a delightful crunch and nuttiness to each bite, making this a truly gourmet burger experience at home.
