Savory Meat Pinwheels
Ingredients:
- For the Dough:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, cubed
- 3/4 cup milk
- For the Filling:
- 1 lb (450g) ground beef or sausage (or a mixture of both)
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon cumin
- 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 cup shredded cheddar or mozzarella cheese
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Fresh parsley or cilantro for garnish (optional)
Instructions:
- Prepare the Dough:
- Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, and salt.
- Cut in the cold butter using a pastry cutter or two knives until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Gradually add the milk, stirring until a soft dough forms.
- Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead gently until smooth. Roll the dough out into a large rectangle, about 1/4 inch thick.
- Prepare the Filling:
- In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef or sausage, breaking it up with a spoon, until browned and cooked through.
- Add the chopped onion and garlic, cooking until the onion is translucent.
- Stir in the paprika, cumin, dried oregano, salt, and pepper, cooking for another 2-3 minutes.
- Remove the skillet from the heat and allow the mixture to cool slightly.
- Once cooled, spread the meat mixture evenly over the rolled-out dough. Sprinkle the shredded cheese over the top.
- Form the Pinwheels:
- Starting from one of the long sides, carefully roll the dough into a log, encasing the filling.
- Using a sharp knife, slice the roll into 1-inch thick slices.
- Place the pinwheels cut side down on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
- Bake:
- Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until the dough is golden brown and the cheese is melted and bubbly.
- Serve:
- Remove from the oven and let the pinwheels cool slightly.
- Garnish with fresh parsley or cilantro if desired, and serve warm.
Tips:
- These pinwheels can be served with a dipping sauce like marinara, ranch, or even a spicy mayo.
- You can make these pinwheels ahead of time and freeze them before baking. Just bake directly from frozen, adding a few extra minutes to the cooking time.
