Classic American Goulash Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 large onion, diced
  • 1 bell pepper, diced (green or red)
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (15 oz) diced tomatoes (undrained)
  • 1 can (15 oz) tomato sauce
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 ½ cups elbow macaroni, uncooked
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp Italian seasoning
  • 1 tsp paprika (optional, for extra flavor)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Fresh parsley or shredded cheese (for garnish, optional)
  • Red pepper flakes (optional, for a little heat)

Instructions

  1. Cook the Ground Beef:
    • In a large pot or Dutch oven, cook the ground beef over medium heat until browned, breaking it up with a spoon as it cooks.
    • Drain any excess fat if needed.
  2. Add Vegetables and Seasoning:
    • Add the diced onion, bell pepper, and minced garlic to the pot with the beef.
    • Cook for about 5 minutes, until the onions are soft and translucent.
  3. Add Tomatoes and Liquids:
    • Stir in the diced tomatoes (with their juice), tomato sauce, beef broth, soy sauce, Worcestershire sauce, Italian seasoning, paprika (if using), salt, and pepper.
    • Bring the mixture to a gentle boil.
  4. Cook the Macaroni:
    • Add the uncooked elbow macaroni to the pot.
    • Reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until the pasta is tender and the sauce has thickened.
    • Stir occasionally to prevent the pasta from sticking to the bottom.
  5. Adjust Seasoning and Serve:
    • Taste and adjust seasoning if necessary, adding more salt, pepper, or red pepper flakes for extra heat.
    • Garnish with fresh parsley or shredded cheese if desired.
  6. Enjoy Warm:
    • Serve the goulash hot in bowls, garnished as desired.

Tips

  • Storage: This dish stores well in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat gently on the stovetop or in the microwave, adding a splash of water or broth if it thickens too much.
  • Make it Cheesy: For a richer dish, stir in 1 cup of shredded cheese (like cheddar) right before serving.
  • Vegetable Additions: You can add more veggies like diced zucchini or mushrooms for extra nutrition.

Enjoy this cozy, flavorful American Goulash! Let me know if you’d like any other pasta or comfort food recipes.
